Short answer: no — a properly used head-up display does not drain your car battery. Both GPS and OBD2 HUDs draw very little power and are designed to cut off when you turn the ignition off.
How GPS HUDs are powered
A GPS head-up display plugs into a 12 V USB adapter or your car’s USB port. Modern 12 V adapters switch off automatically with the ignition, so the unit draws zero power when the car is parked. Power draw while driving is typically 1–2 W — less than a phone charger.
How OBD2 HUDs are powered
An OBD2 HUD draws its power directly from the OBD2 port. In most vehicles the OBD2 port shuts off with the ignition (or within seconds of the engine stopping), so the HUD draws zero standby current. Power while driving is around 0.5–1.5 W.
When to be careful: always-on OBD2 ports
A small number of vehicles (some European makes) keep the OBD2 port powered continuously. If yours does, a permanently connected OBD2 device will draw a tiny continuous current. The fix: unplug it when parked for several days, or use a smart OBD2 adapter with built-in sleep mode. Most US cars are not affected.
How to check your OBD2 port
Turn the ignition off and check whether the HUD screen stays lit. If it goes dark within 30 seconds, your port is switched and you have nothing to worry about. If it stays on, simply unplug the unit when you park overnight. Use the HUD Compatibility Checker to verify your car’s OBD2 profile.
Recommended HUDs with smart power management
All three of our featured HUDs are designed to shut down with the ignition: the GPS Lite (USB power, ignition-switched adapter), the OBD2 Pro (OBD2 port, auto sleep), and the RoadView Max (dual OBD2+GPS, low standby).

Frequently asked questions
Will an OBD2 HUD drain my battery if I leave it plugged in?
In most US cars (1996+) the OBD2 port switches off with the ignition, so a plugged-in OBD2 HUD draws no power when parked. In rare cases where the port stays live, unplug the HUD overnight to be safe.
How much power does a GPS head-up display use?
A GPS HUD typically draws 1–2 W — about the same as an LED night light. Over a 30-minute commute that’s less than 1 Wh, a negligible load for any healthy 12 V car battery.
Is it safe to leave my HUD plugged in all the time?
Yes, as long as your OBD2 port or USB adapter switches off with the ignition, which is the case for the vast majority of vehicles. The HUD simply goes to sleep when the car is off.
