Yes, you can add a heads-up display to almost any car, but usually not the factory kind. Retrofitting the carmaker’s own HUD is a major job on a few models only (a special windshield, dashboard parts, wiring and coding). For everyone else, a plug-in aftermarket HUD that sits on the dashboard takes a few minutes to fit. Which type works depends on your car’s age, fuel type and what you want to see.
Option 1: a plug-in aftermarket HUD (the practical route)
There are three types. Pick by your car, not by features:
| Type | Shows | Works in | Doesn’t work in |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPS HUD | Speed (from satellites), sometimes direction and trip data | Practically any vehicle with a USB port or 12 V socket: old cars, hybrids, EVs, pickups, RVs, motorcycles | Tunnels and garages (GPS signal) |
| OBD2 HUD | Speed plus engine data: RPM, coolant temperature, voltage, fault alerts | Gas cars on the unit’s fitment list (most cover about 2004–2009 onward) | Usually hybrids, EVs, diesels, pickups, RVs and some brands |
| CarPlay / Android Auto HUD | Turn-by-turn navigation from your phone, GPS speed | Any vehicle (it takes power only from the car) | Doesn’t show engine data |
Fitting takes a few minutes: place the unit low on the dash, plug it into USB, 12 V or the OBD2 port, and route the cable along the trim. See the install guide. Unsure which type your car supports? The HUD Compatibility Checker asks three questions.
Our picks by type
- Any car, speed only: the KUOWEIHUD K1 runs on 5 V USB power and needs no OBD2 port.
- Gas car from 2007 on, engine data: the wiiyii P6. Its listing excludes hybrids, diesels, pickups, RVs and brands including Jeep and Fiat.
- Navigation: the VIVIHUD V5 shows wireless CarPlay and Android Auto directions in any vehicle.
Option 2: retrofitting a factory HUD
On some models a specialist can fit the carmaker’s own HUD to a car that left the factory without one. It is a big job, because a factory HUD needs:
- A HUD windshield. Factory HUDs project onto the windshield, which has a wedge-shaped inner film that lines up the reflections from the inner and outer glass. Standard glass gives a double image.
- Dashboard parts with an opening for the projector.
- Wiring to the instrument cluster.
- Coding with the dealer’s diagnostic software, and a compatible instrument and infotainment generation.
Specialists offer this for some BMW and Mercedes-Benz models, for example. See our BMW HUD retrofit guide. Augmented-reality HUDs on newer cars depend on extra camera hardware and generally can’t be retrofitted. For most drivers, the plug-in route gives the core benefit for a fraction of the effort; compare in factory vs aftermarket HUD.
Things to know before you buy
- Windshield projectors and film: aftermarket units that reflect off a normal windshield usually need the supplied reflective film to avoid a faint double image. Units with their own lens or screen don’t.
- Polarized sunglasses can make any HUD, factory or aftermarket, look faint or disappear. See HUD glare fixes.
- Placement: keep the unit low so it never blocks your view of the road, and check local rules on windshield-mounted devices.
- Battery: OBD2 HUDs put themselves to sleep when the engine stops, because the OBD2 port usually stays powered. See does a HUD drain the battery?
- Your car may already have one. Many newer cars offer a factory HUD on upper trims; check our 2026 factory HUD database or brand guides such as Toyota, Lexus, Subaru and Tesla.

Frequently asked questions
Can you add a heads-up display to any car?
Yes. A GPS head-up display works in practically any vehicle with a USB port or 12 V socket. OBD2 HUDs add engine data but only on gas cars on their fitment list, and CarPlay / Android Auto HUDs add navigation in any vehicle.
Can you install a factory heads-up display in a car that doesn’t have one?
On a few models, specialists can retrofit the factory HUD, but it requires a HUD windshield, dashboard parts, wiring and coding. For most cars, a plug-in aftermarket HUD is the realistic option.
Do aftermarket heads-up displays work in electric cars and hybrids?
GPS and CarPlay / Android Auto HUDs do. Plug-in OBD2 HUDs usually don’t: their fitment lists typically exclude hybrids and EVs.
Do I need a special windshield for an aftermarket HUD?
No. Units that project onto the windshield use a reflective film instead, and many units have their own lens or screen. Only factory HUDs need a HUD windshield.
Can I add a heads-up display to an old car?
Yes. A GPS HUD works in any car regardless of age. For engine data, the car must be on an OBD2 HUD’s fitment list, which usually means a gas car from about 2004–2009 onward.
